The Squamish Lil'wat Cultural Centre

A
three-storey, 30,400 square foot complex on a 4.35 acre forested site
overlooking Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains. It is designed to evoke a
traditional Squamish longhouse and a Lil'wat Istken (pit house), with
pictograph-adorned boulders gracing the walkways along the approach to the
carved cedar entry doors.
Designed to preserve the Nations' cultures, and to share their cultures with the
world, using both indoor and outdoor space. There is a Class A museum space to
house rare artifacts, a gift gallery, and an 80 seat theatre. |

gifts of the Creator - now and in the past.
Our BC First Nations exhibits within tell of our long history in the territory,
of our relationship to the land, and all that lies within it.

Beyond
the intricately carved cedar doors lies a world of wisdom exhibited through the
art and artifacts of our two Nations you'll see magnificent dugout canoes, cedar
and wool weavings, art, artifacts, and tools - the treasures of our past and our

| The café at the Squamish Lil'wat Cultural Centre features affordable food
with a First Nations twist with such fare as salmon chowder or venison chili, or
perhaps try a 'mountain hoagie' with Bison Salami, Arctic Muskox, and Wild Boar

Traditional Squamish Longhouse (Tl'aktaxen Lam)

The Longhouse, with its single sloped roof, was the traditional communal
dwelling of the Squamish people.
The traditional longhouse the Traditional Lil'wat Pit House (Istken) and Forest
Walk will be complete by the spring of 2009.

Directions to the Squamish Lil'wat Cultural Centre

From Vancouver:
cross the Lion’s Gate Bridge, take the West Vancouver exit, turn right on Taylor
Way, take Highway 1 exit west, then take Highway 99 (Sea to Sky) exit north to
Whistler, British Columbia. Turn right off Hwy 99 at Lorimer Road exit into
Whistler Village. The centre is located at Lorimer Road across from Lost Lake
Park in Whistler's upper village. (approximate driving time: 2 hours)
Parking:
Once you arrive in Whistler British Columbia, drive to Lorimer Road and, before
approaching the Cultural Centre, turn right into Skiers Lot #4. The Centre is
just east across the bridge from the parking lot. There is a designated loading
and unloading area, several handicap spaces, and a passenger bus drop-off area. |
